Anxiety Therapy

It may sound unlikely, but being worried or anxious can have a positive impact. It helps us focus and stay vigilant to keep ourselves safe. It can be a good motivator to perform well in challenging situations. All emotions are designed to serve a purpose for us. When anxiety becomes too severe, it can begin to have a negative effect on your day-to-day life. If you’re struggling to get work done, spend time with family and friends, or take care of yourself because of anxiety symptoms, therapy may be the best option to alleviate the effects of anxiety and resume your healthy, thriving daily life. You can learn more on this page.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural emotional response that occurs when a situation is difficult, has high stakes, or may be dangerous. The role of anxiety is to increase focus and energy to help the individual get things done successfully. Think about giving a public speech. If you feel nervous leading up to the speech, you may take more time to prepare, so you’ll feel ready to do your best. This is an example of healthy anxiety levels. An example of disordered anxiety levels is if the same situation occurred. Rather than leading the individual to prepare for and give a great speech, a person’s anxiety made them unable to focus long enough to prepare. Then, they got up to give the speech and anxiety caused accelerated heart rate, shaking hands, sweating, and difficulty concentrating that left them unable to even give the speech.

Am I Struggling with Anxiety?

Many people live with anxiety for years. They learn to push those feelings down or develop coping strategies to manage anxiety. When anxiety persists and goes unaddressed, it can lead to numerous concerns, including:

- Losing focus.
- Struggling to make decisions.
- Failing to prioritize tasks.
- Being irritable or having mood swings.
- Having physical symptoms like nausea, heart palpitations, and sweating.
- Getting too much or too little sleep.
- Eating too much or too little.

Why Does Therapy Help?

Therapy can help alleviate the adverse symptoms of anxiety by teaching the individual healthy ways of managing anxiety. These strategies include learning to interrupt negative thinking cycles and increasing distress tolerance. You’ll learn strategies during therapy sessions. Then, the therapist will task you with using these skills in your daily life. At the following session, you’ll discuss the results of using your new strategies and make adjustments or work through other concerns that arise. Our therapists understand how anxiety negatively impacts people, and they can equip you with resources to address anxiety as it arises.

How Do I Schedule a Session?

We make scheduling quick and easy at Ubuntu Psychological Services. Just take a few moments to complete our online scheduling requests. From there, you’ll have a discovery call with a therapist who will answer your questions and get to know you a little better. Then, they’ll schedule an intake session. This appointment is all about creating your plan for ongoing therapy. Your therapist may ask questions about your health and therapy history and your goals for counseling. After that intake visit, you’ll meet with a therapist regularly until you achieve the therapy goals you set.
