Hispanic Therapy

For members of the Hispanic and Latinx community, therapy doesn’t always feel like an option. Our family members tell us we don’t need to take problems to strangers. Our moms tell us to pray about it. Our dads tell us to get some work done and stop focusing on the negative. Aunties and Uncles offer snacks instead of answers. If this sounds familiar, we’ve been there. Therapy doesn’t have a great track record for Hispanic and Latinx people. Therapists who don’t understand what you’ve been through start making you feel like your experiences and emotional responses aren’t valid. At Ubuntu Psychological Services, our team members, therapists, and psychologists are all trained in culturally competent therapy, and we are people of color ourselves. That means we get it. You can learn more about Hispanic therapy with our team on this page.

What Is Culturally Competent Therapy?

Many Latino and Hispanic people struggle with therapy provided by counselors who don’t understand where they’re coming from. It leaves them feeling like their experiences are misunderstood or their emotions aren’t validated. Culturally competent therapy is all about creating a safe space where people feel understood, comfortable, and validated in their experiences and emotional responses. While culturally competent therapy is important for everyone, it’s especially important for people from diverse backgrounds who may have experienced discrimination and adversities.

Should I Consider Hispanic Therapy?

Like all forms of therapy, Hispanic therapy is all about learning to better understand yourself and your needs and working to reduce the effects of difficult emotions, negative thinking, and problematic behaviors.

Some reasons why people consider Hispanic therapy include:
- Alleviating symptoms of mood disorders like depression and anxiety.
- Navigating generational and complex trauma.
- Reducing stress and anxiety.
- Processing racial discrimination.
- Working through life challenges and difficult transitions.

What Happens During Latinx/Hispanic Therapy?

Latinx and Hispanic therapy sessions, like those for people from all backgrounds, are about setting and achieving goals, using research-supported counseling methods. A therapist can help you uncover the ways that mood or cognitive disorders and other life challenges are impacting you and help you develop the resources to manage everything the day throws at you. During your early sessions, you’ll discuss the reasons you chose therapy and set goals for your upcoming appointments. As you work together, you’ll learn coping strategies and develop the skills you need to more easily navigate whatever you’re struggling with. All of this is done in anon-judgmental environment where you’ll feel safe and comfortable and where your emotions will always be validated.

How Do I Schedule a Consultation?

Getting started working with the Ubuntu Psychological Services team is simple. You’ll start by scheduling a short discovery call. After this initial conversation, you’ll schedule an online intake session with a knowledgeable therapist. During this first full session, you’ll talk through your reasons for scheduling a session and goals for therapy. You’ll also talk through health and therapy history. Finally, you’ll create a therapy plan you can work toward together in your online therapy sessions. When you’re ready to schedule your discovery call, just take a few moments to complete our online appointment request.
